We’re living through devastating times. The LA wildfires continue, and Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are seeking retribution.
No one can blame The Hills alums for their anger, even if their response is questionable. The two lost their home to the ongoing wildfire. Since then, they’ve been doing everything they can to raise money and recoup their losses. Even Paris Hilton showed her support for the devastated couple.
She spread the word about their fundraising efforts and donated a bit herself. But clearly, Spencer and Heidi think the city of Los Angeles should be doing more, or rather, should have done more long before the fact.
Heidi and Spencer sue over Los Angeles’ infrastructure
The lawsuit argues that the fire was “an inescapable and unavoidable consequence” due to Los Angeles’ mismanaged water supply in the area. Plaintiffs include “property owners, tenants and individuals” who suffered “untold devastation” from the disaster. The lawsuit cited the Santa Ynez Reservoir in the Palisades, which has “been out of commission since February 2024” according to the suit.
Moreover, the suit alleges that Los Angeles and the Department of Water and Power (LADWP) continued to “operate the water supply system” despite the drained reservoir. As per the suit, “With the Santa Ynez Reservoir effectively out of commission, hydrants in Pacific Palisades failed after three tanks each holding one million gallons of water went dry within a span of 12 hours.”
While these frustrations are completely understandable, some experts push back on the lawsuit’s logic. As one UCLA professor of environmental policy told PEOPLE, “I honestly don’t see how … anything beyond 5, 10, 15 times more investment in the water system could have really made a dent in what happened in some of these fires.”
The professor, Greg Pierce, added, “I’m sure there’s things that could probably increase the resilience in these systems, one to three times … But I don’t think that ultimately made the difference.” Ultimately, climate change is the issue. It’s hard to say if any place is equipped to handle what we’ve done to the planet.
