Meri Brown hung on for the longest time when it came to her marriage to Kody Brown. The Sister Wives star was strung along for years, hoping she would be able to reconcile with the polygamous patriarch. In 2024, Meri finally decided to walk away from her marriage of three decades, and she hasn’t looked back. The latest season has shown Meri thriving. But the amicable separation has now led to a few bruised egos, and the mother of one has to call in lawyers to help her out.
Meri Brown isn’t backing down from a fight
During a recent episode of Sister Wives, Meri was filmed opening up with Janelle Brown about the ongoing issues at Coyote Pass. As TLC fans know, the family had agreed to buy a plot of land in Arizona where they could each build their dream homes. But the years-long project turned into a complete nightmare and left them in debt. Each wife owned a parcel of land, but Kody’s name was on each deed. During her conversation, Meri noted that she had looked into hiring a lawyer to help her get an equal share of the family’s four-plot property. Coyote Pass is currently owned by Janelle, Meri, Kody, and his favorite wife, Robyn Brown.
“There’s been a lot of confusion surrounding the way things have been done in the family, the way that Kody is with me and has been with me for many, many years,” Meri shared in her confessional. She added, “So I think that’s why I’m going to get a lawyer to help me through this process.” The B&B owner went on to say, “I felt like for quite a few years, I’ve just kind of sat back and just not wanted to ruffle feathers. So I haven’t pushed the issue on many things, but I will push the issue.”
Meri Brown confides in her Sister Wives co-star
The episode showed Meri speaking with Janelle over Zoom. Janelle has since left Arizona and moved in with her daughter, Maddie Brown, in North Carolina. In a surprised tone, Janelle asks, “So you’re talking to somebody too?” As Meri nods, Janelle replies, “Okay, good.” Janelle has always been the most down-to-earth and logical of the wives. She adds, “I’m glad it just makes sure it gets done fairly and in a timely manner because I think Kody could just drag his feet if he wanted to.” Sister Wives viewers have watched Kody dawdle when it comes to making decisions about the land. He often keeps his wives waiting on important financial issues, too.
Meri perked up, sharing, “That’s why I said we need to do this by such and such a date. Let’s come up on a date,” to which Janelle said: “Today’s that date!” Janelle and Meri have not always gotten along, so seeing the two women present a united front was nice. “I’m so, so glad Meri understands it’s wise to have a lawyer because we’re not family anymore,” Janelle shares in her own confessional. “I mean, this is people now trying to dissolve a business that went bad, basically.”
Janelle Brown has also gotten a lawyer
Meri told viewers, “I’ve always felt like our family was supposed to be a team. Right now, I feel like there’s the Christine and Janelle team, and then there’s the Kody and Robyn team. I don’t want to be on anybody’s team.” Janelle seemingly agreed with Meri’s views, telling her, “There’s no protection, Meri, especially for you, you’re on one piece of land.” Janelle added, “You would get a third. In technicality, you get a third of one of those pieces, and that’s not fair, right?”
Janelle was the first to hire a lawyer to represent her interests. She had shared that she wanted to get the sale of Coyote Pass moving. Janelle is fearful that Kody might never give her what she was due. Janelle’s lawyers feel they can argue that they should each get a percentage of the land because both paid for the land out of the family account. “There’s really not a whole lot of legal agreements. But there were family relationships … There’s a lot I think that we can stand on. We all paid for it equally,” Janelle says.
Sister Wives is available to stream on TLC.
