Opinion: Teresa Giudice Not Supporting RHONY’s Abortion Storyline Isn’t Cool

Teresa Giudice has never been one to follow the masses. She single-handedly put Real Housewives of New Jersey on the map with her table flip. But over the years, she has misspoken or stepped out of a line a few times. Between trying to set her sister-in-law up as a stripper, trying to cheat the United States government, and marrying a man almost nobody trusts, she’s had her work cut out for her. Recently, however, she spoke about the abortion storyline on The Real Housewives of New York, and her view was not favorable. Personally, I’ll never stop standing for speaking a woman’s truth. So, Tre, you’re on your third strike in my playbook. And before any troll comes at me, please refer to the title where it says it is my “opinion.”

What did the RHONY abortion storyline cover?

@glamourmag

TW: Abortion On ‘The Real Housewives of New York City’, it seems like no topic is off limits. During the course of 15 seasons, members of the cast have—often candidly, sometimes reluctantly—opened up about everything from their sex lives to their finances. And yet, there was one thing @Erin Lichy never thought she’d share. The reality star sat down with Glamour Global Editorial Director, @Samantha Barry, for a wide-ranging interview about the 37-year-old’s new mezcal, how her life has changed since joining the reality show in 2022, and the topic she’s finally ready to talk about decades later: her abortion story. During the most recent season of the Real Housewives of New York, Erin Lichy spoke bravely about her private journey. She shared with millions that she had chosen to have an abortion while in college.

Just a week after moving into college, Erin found herself in a predicament. She told Glamour, “I literally remember the feeling washing over me in my dorm bathroom, and I just lost it,” Erin said. “I was sitting on the floor for maybe an hour and a half hysterically crying, just like, ‘What am I gonna do? Oh my God.’ It was so terrifying to me.” Erin was only 18.

For Erin, her decision to tell her story came after the historic 2022 overturning of Roe vs Wade. “Forget about choice for women like me, but what about someone who’s suffering or has a high-risk pregnancy?” she told the magazine. “It goes so far beyond just my experience, and it’s scary. It’s scary to be a woman. If such a fundamental right could be stripped from us, what else can?”

Jenna Lyons also shared her abortion story in an effort to show Erin she was not alone. The entire episode was moving and an extremely important conversation to have during these trying times.

Here’s what Teresa Giudice had to say

Sometimes, I wish Teresa would just read a newspaper. Or at least read the room. On a recent podcast, Tre came across as quite the hypocrite as she claimed to applaud the women of the Real Housewives of New York for telling their abortion story, but she just wasn’t a fan.

She told the hosts, “To me, I don’t know, a mom of four girls, I don’t think I would really want to advertise that I’m getting abortions. I wouldn’t want my kids to think that that’s okay. I know that’s a touchy subject. But to me, it’s something private … I was just like, ‘Wow.’ I was taken aback by that.” So Tre, riddle me this. What do you talk to your daughters about?

Do you talk to your girls about the teen pregnancy stats? (Which for 2024 were 25 births per 1,000 women.) Do you talk about the abortion rates for women? (Which in 2023 were 15.9 for every 1,000 women.) Tre, do you even speak to your daughters about how privileged they are to live in a state where abortion is legal at any stage of pregnancy and has strong protections for abortion care and access? No, I imagine you don’t. I’m sure you’re instead focused on figuring out a plan on how to return to RHONJ.

Can Teresa even vote?

Not addressing these real-life issues is setting her daughters up for failure. I don’t really care what your beliefs are, but if you’re not pro-women, that is an issue for me.

Over the years, we’ve seen Teresa try to bring down multiple ladies in her cast. The behavior has been questionable. Whether out of jealousy or pure spite. But what I find more disturbing is how she so quickly shut down a conversation so many were so proud to be having finally. Not for nothing, Teresa filmed herself going to court and prison after owing more than $13 million to the United States government.

She then married that guy. While her old-world mentality might have worked back in 2009, there is no room left for her inability to not think outside the box of her strict rules, which, for Tre, the Catholic Church usually dictated.

To be honest, I didn’t realize her opinion would trigger me so much. But I think, like most of the women I know, we are just so tired of being treated like a second-class citizen by our fellow sex. And I definitely didn’t need to be given an opinion of a convicted felon. For me, her comments tried to downplay all the work the RHONY women put into their stories. As a convicted felon, Tre wasn’t allowed to cast any vote until her parole was done in 2017.

Teresa has exhausted me

No woman makes this decision half-heartedly, and for Tre not to show any grace was appalling. This all comes down to a woman’s right to choose what to do with their body.

I shouldn’t be so upset; the clues were all there. Tre has never been a girl’s girl. She even tried sucking up to the current president in hopes of a pardon for Joe Giudice. Thanks to Tre’s unwarranted comments, she has the entire women’s movement questioning, “why did we burn our bras in the first place?”
