On The Bachelor Season 29, Episode 3, Beverly Ortega found out that she earned a one-on-one date with Grant Ellis. The date never happened. By the end of the episode, we learned that Beverly had exited the competition, leaving the audience at home wondering what the hell happened.
While we would have loved for this to be some sort of juicy scandal, it turns out Beverly’s absence was due to a medical emergency that left her unable to continue the competition. Her heart was ready for love, but her body had other plans.
How an emergency surgery took Beverly Ortega out of Season 29
When Beverly’s exit from Season 29 was addressed on the show, they simply said that she was “very sick.” That wasn’t just an excuse for TV. She really was down for the count!
Beverly went on the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast to break down exactly what happened. She told them that she started the day off feeling “so happy” about her one-on-one date, only to end up in the hospital a few hours later.
“I honestly was so excited because I’m like, ‘We’re gonna have the whole day. I’m gonna get to eat, sleep, just relax, no drama. And I take a nap, and I wake up, and my stomach’s hurting,” Beverly recalled.
She went to the bathroom and started throwing up. She didn’t know if it was anxiety or food poisoning, but she didn’t think it was serious. However, the “excruciating pain” and the puking went on for 12 hours. That prompted production to take her to the emergency room.
Beverly explained, “The doctor came in, and he’s like, ‘You have appendicitis, and you’re going to need emergency surgery.’”
Can you imagine going across the country to film The Bachelor, only to end up having to get emergency surgery a few days into the experience? What a disaster!
“At that point, I still was not really processing. I am a crier. I am emotional. Did not cry one time. I was like, ‘OK, like my family isn’t here, my friends aren’t here. I’m about to have major surgery on an organ,’” she continued.
Ultimately, the surgery went well. Doctors removed the problematic appendix, and she recovered without any issues. According to Beverly, the emotional recovery was worse. She didn’t even get a chance to say bye to Grant.
“I was really sad — really, really bummed out…I hope he didn’t think that like I left just because,” Beverly said.
The Bachelor continues on ABC every Monday at 8/7c.
