Hilaria Baldwin Addresses ‘Fake Accent’ Accusations: ‘I Mix’

For years, people have accused Hilaria Baldwin of using a “fake accent.” Even though she was born in Boston, she claims she spent a lot of time going back and forth between Spain and the U.S. while growing up.

Although her accent seems to come and go, The Baldwins star insists she’s not being “inauthentic.” She’s just being bilingual.

“I love English. I also love Spanish,” she said in a confessional on her new show. “When I mix the two it doesn’t make me inauthentic … That makes me normal.”

Hilaria and Alec Baldwin are raising bilingual children

Originally, Hilaria presented herself as being from Spain. But in 2020, Page Six outed her as just plain old Boston-born Hillary. At the time, the mom of seven children with husband Alec Baldwin claimed to have spent part of her childhood in Spain. In an Instagram video, she explained that she grew up speaking both English and Spanish, hence the accent.

Actually, Hilaria’s parents didn’t move to Mallorca until 2011. By that time, she was already 27 years old. Pesky timelines aside, she still insists she’s bilingual and is hurt by the controversy over the way she speaks, something Dorit Kemsley can definitely relate to.

The TLC star maintains that she was influenced by “my family, my friends, my community who speak multiple languages … We are a mix of all these different things … That’s going to have an impact on how we sound … how we articulate things.”

Believing that being bilingual is “normal” and “human,” the Yoga Vida co-founder is raising her and Alec’s children to also be bilingual.

“I want to teach my kids pride in speaking more than one language,” Hilaria concluded. “Just growing up and speaking two languages is extremely special.”

The Baldwins airs Sundays at 10/9c on TLC.
