RHOP’s Karen Huger Sentencing Verdict After DUI Conviction: Gets One Year Jail Time

The verdict is in for Real Housewives of Potomac star Karen Huger, who has been sentenced after her DUI conviction, receiving two years, with one year suspended. Karen will spend one year in jail. She will pay $2,900 in fines, and cannot drive at all for a year following her release. Her sentence also including five years of supervised probation upon release with interlock. Without violations, it would become unsupervised after three years.

The 61-year-old reality TV star was convicted in December 2024 following a three-day trial. She drove into a pedestrian crossing sign and her vehicle came to rest upon a grassy mound, on top of yet another sign. Karen entered the court for her sentencing verdict through a basement entrance, wearing all black pants and a black jacket. Her husband Ray Huger was by her side, and even testified. Karen’s attorney blamed the overuse of prescription medicine for the accident and said the case never should’ve gone to trial.

The prosecution in the case called Karen a “severe risk to public safety” after Karen crashed her car on March 19, 2024, just before midnight. Body-cam footage showed Karen being uncooperative on the scene, and slurring her words while refusing a sobriety test. The judge was not impressed by her actions. Karen’s defense attorneys said she was “emotionally distressed.” They argued for a sentence focused on rehabilitation rather than jail time.

Prosecutors were seeking a two-year sentence with all bar six months suspended, after citing three prior DUI offenses, and accusing Karen of spending time at a luxury spa resort instead of a rehab center before her conviction. Karen did later enter a treatment program following her conviction. The prosecution also asked for a number of stipulations, including interlock devices on Karen’s vehicles.

What does Karen Huger’s sentencing verdict mean for her future on Bravo?

Bravo has no problem allowing problematic characters to return to the small screen. You just need to look at Teresa Giudice on The Real Housewives of New Jersey to realize that. She pled guilty to bank, mail, wire, and bankruptcy fraud, before serving a prison sentence and returning to RHONJ.

Shannon Beador also made a triumphant return to The Real Housewives of Orange County following her own DUI drama. The difference with the latter is that Shannon admitted her wrongdoing at an early stage, rather than going to trial.

Nobody knows whether or not Karen will make a return to RHOP. In fact, it could be the case that Karen doesn’t want to return at all. It might be time for the Grand Dame to look inward, reflect on her choices that have led her to this point, and take a break from the spotlight.

Of course, this type of fame is fleeting, and incredibly addictive. Karen might be just the type of personality that cannot let it go. If this is the case, the choice will be Bravo and NBCUniversal’s to make. With so many other problems on their plate, can they afford to allow this one marinate?

The Real Housewives of Potomac is available to stream on Peacock.
