The off-and-on friendship between Vanderpump Rules co-stars Scheana Shay and James Kennedy has hit a rough patch. Scheana just unfollowed the DJ on Instagram. And while it was assumed that it was because of a chaotic selfie he recently shared on IG, that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
As soon as fans noticed Scheana unfollowed James on Instagram, it was instantly suspected that it was due to his recent run-in with Andrew and Tristan Tate. He took a photo with the controversial brothers and while he quickly backpedaled and apologized for the picture, Tristan called him out for not telling the real story about their interaction.

Scheana says that the Tate Brothers fiasco was not the reason for unfollowing James. In the March 21 episode of her Scheananigans podcast, she quickly addressed the rumors once and for all.
“I did not unfollow James recently because of him posting with the Tate brothers. It was actually coincidental timing,” she explained in the episode.
Instead, she revealed that it was due to his ex-girlfriend Ally Lewber unfollowing him on social media.
“She was like, ‘OK, I think it’s time. I think I need to unfollow him.’ And I was like, ‘If you’re doing it, I’m doing it. I don’t want to follow him anymore because the following looks like I’m supporting him.’”
The VPR fanbase was shocked back in December 2024 when James was arrested following a domestic dispute with Ally. He ultimately wasn’t charged for the incident, but this is what led the couple to split.
James is still following Scheana on Instagram. This isn’t the first time that Scheana has found herself in a situation like this.
After the infamous Scandoval, the podcast host continuously vented her frustration of having to publicly choose between standing by Ariana Madix or Tom Sandoval. And now, she’s not close with either.
