Ben Affleck Explains Divorce With Jennifer Lopez: ‘Nothing but Respect’

Ben Affleck has “nothing but respect” for Jennifer Lopez as he explained the reason behind their recent divorce and cleared up longstanding speculation. In his expansive cover interview with GQ for its April 2025 issue, Affleck broke his silence about the realities of their split after confirming their settlement in January. Reportedly, J.Lo filed for divorce from the actor last August, listing April 26, 2024, as the date of separation. The following months witnessed endless gossip and rumors surrounding their relationship and breakup. This marked his first statement since the news broke as he claimed, “There’s no scandal.”

Ben Affleck reflects on Jennifer Lopez divorce and more

Ben Affleck‘s cover star conversation with GQ reflected one of his rare thoughtful moods as he addressed the reason behind his divorce from Jennifer Lopez despite being “more reserved and private.” He further told the publication’s senior special projects editor Zach Baron that he was okay with sharing details about his “personal life” during their conversation. “I don’t mind doing [that] as long as my actual feelings and intentions and beliefs are communicated,” Affleck explained before noting that his ex-wife is “somebody I have a lot of respect for.”

The actor got candid about having “nothing but respect” for Lopez and addressed the “tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something.” He then confirmed that the truth behind their breakup was “much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting.” Baron sought further clarification by asking if he meant “quotidian in the sense that there’s not some major thing?” to which Affleck affirmed that “there’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue.”

According to Ben Affleck, there was no “this is what happened” in his and Jennifer Lopez’s divorce, which was just “a story about people trying to figure out their lives and relationships” in the most normal sense. “There is no ‘So-and-so did this’ or ‘This was the big event,'” he repeated, comparing their breakup to a “couple’s therapy session.” The Oscar winner added how it “is just sort of embarrassing” and “feels vulnerable” to share openly. In addition, he touched upon other subjects, such as his involvement in Lopez’s documentary “The Greatest Love Story Never Told.”
