Venita Aspen has always seemed like the most level-headed charmer on Southern Charm. So it came as a surprise when Craig Conover revealed he no longer wanted to be associated with the influencer. The Sewing Down South founder has had his share of questionable moments this season. But the series showed the duo getting along for the most part. So what went wrong with Venita and Craig’s friendship?
Craig Conover is burning bridges on Southern Charm
Fan favorite or not, Craig is burning bridges with his once-close friends. He has kept Shep Rose and Austen Kroll at arm’s length for two seasons. Austen felt Craig was growing too big for his britches, often acting as if he were better than his costars. However, Craig finally revealed that he was suffering from an addiction issue. While his explanation was welcome, it still hasn’t totally explained his callous attitude towards the rest of his cast. For example, he was extremely hard on Shep during his courtship with Sienna Evans. Instead of being supportive, Craig found every opportunity to drive the knife home that the beauty queen was just using his friend. Craig also wasn’t kind to JT Thomas. Not that anyone else was. But it felt like the Bravoleb almost went out of his way to set JT up.
Craig reported back to the group misinformation more often than not and even put words into JT’s mouth. Even though cameras caught the mistakes, Craig has yet to apologize. He seems to be doubling down on his bad attitude, as noted when he yelled at Leva Bonaparte during the Southern Charm reunion.
Venita Aspen has been on the outside all season
As much as I enjoy watching Venita on Southern Charm, she has always come across as an outsider. Honestly, she might just be too kind for reality TV. The influencer lacked a real storyline until this season when her romance with JT was revealed. More often than not, she plays the supporting actress role as she frequently doles out solid advice to the rest of the cast when they are in trouble. Her first main issue was during Season 9 when she and Madison LeCroy had a few bumps in their friendship.
But Season 10 showed Venita drifting even farther from the main cast members due to her friendship with JT. More than once, she found herself sticking up for JT when he had put his foot in it. She often went out on a limb to make sure he was invited to group gatherings and heard when everyone else seemed to be tuning him out. Sadly, her romantic feelings might have gotten in the way of her judgment, but she is learning not to be taken advantage of.
Why is Craig Conover no longer friends with Venita Aspen?
It turns out that in a Bravo breakup, you have to choose a side. According to Craig, his co-star chose poorly when she showed support for his ex, Paige DeSorbo. While on Watch What Happens Live, a fan asked Craig about his feelings regarding Venita having texted Paige after their split. “You know you can’t control what other people say. You can only control how you react to it. If I’m being honest, I won’t be associated with her because any of my friends as I grow older, my circle gets tighter and tighter.”
As Andy Cohen, Austen, and Shep looked uncomfortable, he added, “And it wasn’t about being on Paige’s side; you can be Paige’s friend or whatever – it was what she said about me. I didn’t think was true, and I think she was regurgitating gossip from the internet. Yeah, so I’m not friends with her. I wish her well, but no one is entitled to my friendship, and she definitely isn’t anymore.” Venita didn’t seem to be losing too much sleep over the matter. In fact, she took to Twitter to comment, noting, “I got some of the best sleep of my life last night, so …”
Southern Charm is available to stream on Peacock.
