Kandi Burruss Scores Huge Career High With Othello’s $2.8 Million Record-Breaking Week

Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Kandi Burruss and her husband Todd Tucker may just be Broadway’s current power couple. After co-producing Broadway shows for years, Kandi and Todd have finally struck gold.

The couple is part of the production team for Broadway’s Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. The revival is playing to packed houses, breaking all attendance records, and has moved into the top spot as the highest-grossing production in Broadway history.

In its second week of previews, the show reportedly brought in $2.8 million. Since it opened on March 23, the production is playing at 100% capacity. It’s also now the most expensive ticket on Broadway. With an average price of $338.09, a ticket for Othello costs far more than one to see either Wicked or Hamilton.

In a March interview, Kandi shared why audiences are so drawn to the new production of the 425-year-old play. “This isn’t [just] another Shakespearean production,” she told Waymaker Journal last month. “It’s starring Denzel Washington. It’s set in 2028. The clothes are modern. The delivery feels real and passionate. You can see yourself in it — even though they’re still using Shakespeare’s words.”

Further, Kandi confessed that her goal is to introduce theater to a wider audience than would normally buy a ticket to a Broadway show. “In the opportunities that I get, I’m always trying to elevate and make way for more opportunity for people like myself,” she added.

The Atlanta native wants to make Broadway accessible “for Black people, people of color, and women,” she continued. “We had people coming to New York to see a show [who’d never been to Broadway before] … We’re not just waiting for the people who already go to shows. We’re making our shows the destination.”

But if you want to see the Othello revival, you’d better hurry. The production is in the middle of a strict 15-week Broadway engagement. The curtain comes down for the last time on June 8.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta airs Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo.
