Season 2 of The Golden Bachelor has found its lead! Mel Owens, a former NFL player, will lead the seniors-only dating show. ABC confirmed the news of The Golden Bachelor 2 cast on Tuesday, April 22, during an event showcasing some of their upcoming reality TV shows. Naturally, we’ve got all of the tea on what Bachelor Nation is saying about their newest leading man.
Mel Owens, former NFL player, is The Golden Bachelor for Season 2
On Instagram, ABC flashed a picture of Mel along with some fast facts about him. The caption teased, “He’s 66 and single — for now. Meet Mel Owens, a former NFL player-turned-lawyer, proud father, and your next Golden Bachelor.”
Mel used to play for the Los Angeles Rams as a linebacker back in the 1980s. He played nine seasons and then shifted to a legal career in his retirement. We’re not counting anyone’s coins, but that sounds like a man who has some money.
According to a press release, Mel was previously married and shares two sons with his ex-wife. Now, he’s looking to find love that’s “rooted in the simple joys of companionship.” He said he wants to plan a future together, and we’re hoping that this works out better than Season 1’s Golden Bachelor.
On Instagram, the reaction to Mel seemed mixed. One fan commented, “I’m surprised they didn’t pick someone we already know.” Another asked, “Shouldn’t they of picked someone from The Golden Bachelorette?”
Candiace Dillard Bassett from The Real Housewives of Potomac also jumped into the conversation to weigh in on the Season 2 announcement. The singer and actress expressed her disappointment at the lack of diversity. She wrote, “Where are the POC Golden Bach’s?”
Despite the uncertainty from Bachelor fans in the Instagram comments, host Jesse Palmer told Us Weekly that he felt confident about Mel leading Season 2. They’re currently gearing up for production, and he said that Mel has a compelling story to share. He’s hopeful that the former football player will find love.
“Mel is obviously super handsome. He’s very charming, he’s very intelligent, he’s very successful,” Jesse noted.
