Why Teresa Giudice Thought Fraud Charges Were a ‘Joke’

Teresa Giudice of the Real Housewives of New Jersey has never claimed to be the brightest crayon in the box. Between her Tre-isms and uncanny ability to never take accountability, the OG has found herself in multiple issues after issue. However, it’s safe to say that most of us would never think charges from the U.S. Government were a joke.

Even though it’s been ten years since Teresa went to jail, Real Housewives of New Jersey fans haven’t forgotten. In 2013, Tre and Joe Giudice were accused of putting false statements on loan applications. It was also alleged that Joe had his wife sign off on the paperwork. After being found guilty, the mother of four went to prison. Joe then spent three years behind bars and was deported back to Italy. Messing with the United States Government is no joke. And while Teresa has hinted that she was a target due to her high profile, fans are also learning she might not have understood the ramifications of her actions.

While a guest on her daughter, Gia Giudice’s, Casual Chaos podcast, the reality TV star opened up about the events that led to her spending time behind bars. Gia jumped right in, asking her mother when she initially found out about the charges. Teresa replied, “I thought it was all a joke. I never thought I was gonna go to jail. Never ever in a million years, cause I didn’t do anything.” She told her eldest daughter, “I was like I’m not involved in my husband’s business. I didn’t do anything wrong. And I just went to a closing. I went to a lawyer’s office, and I put my John Hancock on papers. So I thought I would have a house.”

RHONJ OG Teresa Giudice is still in hot water after a hefty tax bill

According to Tre, she only recently asked Joe about the papers she signed. “I just asked, I’m like, ‘What did I do? How many houses did I buy? One or two?’” she noted. “He’s like, ‘You didn’t even buy a house. We refinanced a property I had.’ And I was like, ‘What? I went to jail for refinancing a house?’ I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’” However, Teresa still has yet to learn her lesson as she has recently been hit with another hefty tax bill.

In March, Real Housewives of New Jersey fans learned that Luis Ruelas owed over $2.5 million in taxes to the State of New Jersey. According to court documents, Teresa is also in hot water. Mercer County filed a judgment case against the author. The state documents show that Teresa owes $303,889.20. Teresa has already paid down a 2023 tax lien for the amount of $615,720.94. Her lawyer noted, “Ms. Giudice has been aware of her tax obligations for years and makes significant, timely monthly payments towards her outstanding tax liabilities and will continue to do so until those liabilities do not exist.”

What does the future look like for RHONJ’s Teresa Giudice?

Personally, if I were Tre, I’d be shaking in my Christian Louboutin boots. But the Real Housewives of New Jersey star just keeps plugging along amid her legal issues. Even though Teresa has stopped getting a Bravo paycheck due to the franchise’s rebrand, she is still earning a paycheck. She recently launched her own lipstick line. And she still works on her podcast. Teresa is also keeping busy with her constant meet-and-greets and fan cruises.

Little is known about the rebrand of the Real Housewives of New Jersey. Some think the OG should be put out to pasture, while others insist she is the life of the show. If Teresa is once again having money problems, it would be a good storyline for Bravo cameras to pick up on. But as of now, filming is not currently underway. Hopefully, Teresa is brushing up on her legal obligations with the help of Gia, who once wanted to be a lawyer. If history does somehow repeat itself, fans will know once and for all that Tre has always believed she could get away with murder, or at least in this case, withholding her tax payments. But didn’t you know, Tre, there are two guarantees in life – death and taxes.

Real Housewives of New Jersey is available to stream on Peacock and Hayu in the UK and Ireland.
