Al Sharpton is joining Nolan Wells’ family and attorney Ben Crump as they seek a federal review into Wells’ disappearance and death. The group will address the case at the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Atlanta. Their request comes as questions remain about the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death.

Rev. Al Sharpton will join Wells’ parents and attorney Ben Crump at a press conference Thursday morning. The group will call on the Department of Justice to open an independent federal review. The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) is also urging officials to take a closer look at the case. Chair Yvette D. Clarke and other members sent a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Kash Patel on Wednesday.
Crump represents the Wells family and has repeatedly called for a thorough and transparent investigation. His team is also conducting its own investigation into Wells’ death. Wells went missing after he failed to return from a July 4 boating trip with friends. His body was found in the water off Horn Island on July 6.
The family also commissioned an independent autopsy to examine Wells’ death. The autopsy listed both the cause and manner of death as undetermined. The office of District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath said officials will withhold the state autopsy report. A grand jury must review the report before it can be released.
The latest effort places Sharpton alongside Wells’ family in seeking a federal review of the case. Wells’ parents, Crump, and Sharpton will address the media during the NABJ convention in Atlanta. They are calling on federal authorities to review the circumstances surrounding Wells’ disappearance and death. The Congressional Black Caucus has also asked the Department of Justice and the FBI to review the case.
