Spencer Pratt, the reality TV personality who recently ran as a Republican candidate for Los Angeles mayor, has mocked New York Gov. Kathy Hochul over her decision to wear a hijab at a Muslim event. His remarks came as Hochul faced criticism from Pratt and other pro-Trump voices online.

Hochul recently attended an event at the Islamic Cultural Center School in the Bronx while wearing a black hijab. After she shared a video from her speech, Pratt took aim at her on X.
“Feminist icon, Kathy Hochul. Slay, kween!” he wrote.
The New York Young Republican Club also criticized the governor while reposting a clip of her remarks. The group accused Hochul of “bowing to the third world at the Islamic Cultural Center of NYC” and questioned the center’s funding.
Other MAGA-aligned users joined the criticism, with some calling Hochul a hypocrite because she identifies as a feminist. Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, described “sexist” liberals as hypocritical for criticizing President Donald Trump while Hochul wore the hijab.
Newsmax host Rob Schmitt also attacked the governor, writing, “Yes, hide your hair. Subjugate yourself to Islam and men. It’s your job as a woman to make sure men don’t see any sexuality in you. Good job, Governor Kathy Hochul.”
Fox News host Riley Gaines similarly questioned what she called the “irony” of Hochul being a “self-described feminist voluntarily wearing a hijab to not offend/arouse Muslim men.”
The criticism also took on a broader political angle because the event came about two weeks before the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. Some social media users argued that Hochul’s appearance was inappropriate given the timing, with one even suggesting she should not attend the anniversary.
Hochul has previously spoken openly about her views on feminism. In a 2023 interview with WBFO, she was asked whether she considered herself a “modern feminist.” Hochul answered, “Oh, very much so.” She explained that feminism means being aware of the challenges women face and working to improve their lives.
