Dance Moms Recap: Abby Sinks SoLo

Has this season of Dance Moms been going on long enough that we’re already at ALDC showcase? Abby Lee Miller is still torturing her dancers as to who will compete in Nationals. Who cares about Nationals…did y’all see Maddie do her Chandelier dance on last night’s Dancing with the Stars? She is crazy talented, but that dance has always given me the shivers. However, it’s safe to say that her duet partner is going to give me full on night terrors. How creepy was that? Sorry, I digress.

Abby is stressed and exciting about her upcoming dance concert. Kamryn has returned and Christi is upset as Chloe has already beaten her before. In the pyramid, Chloe is on the bottom because of her injury. MacKenzie follows for not being in sync in the group number. Kendall is in third for getting second to Nia. Maddie is second on the pyramid. Abby reminds her that if a bigger opportunity for her that conflicts with Nationals, she’ll have to take it instead of joining her team. Deservedly, Nia is in the top spot for her first time ever as the highest scoring soloist at the competition. A teary Abby announces that the group number will be a tribute to her mother. Additionally, each girl will be showcasing a forty-five second solo that will be her audition from Nationals. Abby will not rehearse nor watch the routines before the concert. The girls are on their own to choreograph what they believe is their best vignette.

In the viewing room, Christi and Kamryn’s mom argue over the rumor that Abby tried to overturn Chloe’s win in favor of Kamryn. To settle the score, Christi calls the head of said competition, and he confirms that Abby basically tried to go against her own student. Jill and Holly seem horrified, but not really surprised. During rehearsals, Abby wants to relieve some of the tension so she brought in a dunking booth. When no one has the aim to dunk their feared leader, the girls charge the tank. Kendall describes it as a big sea creature sinking under water. She’s a brave one to say that!

Inside, Chloe’s foot is swelling so badly that she can’t fit on her toe shoe. Chloe doesn’t want to let her team down by missing the concert. Christi feels guilty that she ruined her daughter’s chance to dance at Nationals last year after she got into a drunken fight with ol’ what’s her name in New Orleans. The following day, Chloe arrives sporting a giant boot. She has a buckle fracture and shouldn’t dance for at least a week…doctor’s orders. The girls are working on their forty-five second solos while Christi and Kamryn’s mom rage in the viewing room. While I see Christi’s point that it’s unfair for Kamryn to return after being beaten by Chloe, I don’t doubt for a second that Christi would do the same if the tables were turned. Ya’ll know I’m right!

Christi is hard at work to convince Abby that Chloe’s foot will be just fine to compete in Nationals. Abby can’t focus on that–with Chloe missing from this week’s concert routine, her choreography seems unbalanced. Abby decides she needs to give another dancer the boot as well (no pun intended!). Poor Sarah is placed on the sidelines, and Jill encourages Christ-y to confront Abby. Sarah is sobbing and begging her mom to let go of the drama. Despite Sarah’s protests, Christ-y forces her daughter back into the studio, and she’s met with harsh criticism from the other mothers. Christ-y doesn’t last long before storming out again.

As the girls prep their solos, Holly gives them each a pep talk. Having never had a Nationals solo, Nia is working extra hard. The rest of the girls are rehearsing as well, and Melissa is worried about MacKenzie’s chances of having a solo at Nationals. Christi is peeved that Kamryn is the lead in the group number, especially with Chloe unable to dance. The concert is sold out, and Jodi is hoping that Kamryn will prove her worth to Abby. The Heist group number is adorable. Everyone hits their mark. Chloe watches from the audience with a smile as tears stream down her cheeks. It’s the first time in twelve years that she hasn’t been a part of the concert. Nia isn’t too stressed about the forty-five second solo because she knows Abby is going to pick who she wants to pick regardless of their performance. That said, Nia does an excellent job.

Jill wants Kendall to look at this solo as an opportunity to step out of Maddie’s shadow, and Abby seems pleased with her number. MacKenzie disappoints Abby and gets into a pinching match with her sister backstage while her friends urge her not to cry. I know it’s just sisterly competition, but Maddie seemed a little pleased at Mack-Z’s mishap, didn’t she? While Holly critiques Kamryn’s technique, Abby raves about her facial expressions. Abby shares her written critiques with the mothers, and all of the mothers are equally shocked that Abby didn’t mention Kamryn’s sloppy turns. Apparently, all the other moms noticed as well. Nia is tearful after reading Abby’s criticism, and Christi rushes to console her. After the concert, Abby hosts a tearful dinner reception in her mother’s memory. Still one more competition until Nationals…
