After her indictment in 2015 for attempting to hide $775,000 in income from bankruptcy creditors, Abby Lee Miller was sentenced yesterday to a year and a day in federal prison. This morning she sat down with Good Morning America to talk about the sentencing and what will be next for her post-prison.
What is the next chapter for the former Dance Moms star? “To be a smarter businesswoman. Also, to worry about myself. I have spent so much time and so much energy making other people’s children stars. I didn’t have any children of my own, these were my kids. And I raised them like they were my kids.” When asked if she loved those kids, she tearfully nods and says “I do.”
She gets emotional when asked about the charge of trying to “hide” the $775,000. “I don’t want to hear that number anymore!” She says she was NOT trying to hide the money. “Not intentionally, no. And I wasn’t ever trying to hurt anyone.”
GMA spoke with the U.S. Attorney’s office and they said in a statement, “This defendant secreted and structured profits that she derived outside the United States from performances by children.” They added that Miller’s actions “undermine our justice system.”
Abby says “I’m just going to pretend I’m shooting a movie and we’re on set and I’m there for 10 months. That’s the way it’s gonna be.” She plans to spend her days reading and learning to speak Spanish. “And I’m already working on a new book.
Abby has to report to prison within the next 44 days, either in West Virginia or California and will likely serve 10 months.
She says that if she could change things, she never would have filed for bankruptcy.
