So when it comes to The Golden Bachelor, Gerry Turner, the show exposed him to many new experiences. Other than dating several women at once, what else was new to the retiree? He took his first STD test before starting the show!
During a recent appearance on Justin Long’s Life is Short podcast, Gerry, 72, shared that he heard from the producers while vacationing in Florida about the extra requirement.
A new experience for Golden Bachelor Gerry
“I was traveling with an old girlfriend, who is just a friend, and I got a call from ABC wanting me to initiate the process to go get an STD test,” he shared.
Gerry had previously been married to his late wife Toni for 43 years prior to her death in 2017 and admitted that STD testing was a foreign concept to him.
“That may have been my first STD test,” he admitted. “I had no idea what was going to happen. I didn’t know if they were going to look in the iris of my eye or take a urine or blood sample,” he said.
And apparently, the sexual health check-up was not the only thing he had to pass prior to filming the show. He also had to undergo a background check and send his fingerprints to the FBI, too.
“There was also a psychological evaluable that was like 360 questions and another one-hour interview,” he revealed. “The vetting process is ridiculously thorough.”
Honestly, that’s a good thing testing is so thorough, though. Gotta weed out any potential issues beforehand.

But all the testing and background checks were worth it, as Gerry has thrived on the show and won over the hearts of the women and the viewers too.
And now, he’s looking at another shot at love! Having whittled down the contestants to finalists Leslie Fhima and Theresa Nist, he’s set on making his final decision. He’s told both women he loves them, and it looks like it will be a really emotional conclusion.
The Golden Bachelor Season Finale airs on Nov 30, Thursday, 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
