Joey Kovar gained attention on 2009’s The Real World: Hollywood when his housemates staged an on-camera intervention over his out-of-control drinking.
Joey admitted he had struggled with substance abuse for years and left the show mid-season to enter rehab. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to maintain his sobriety. Following that he appeared on 2010’s Celebrity Rehab where he was described as being addicted to cocaine and ecstasy.
The show’s website details Joey’s history with substance abuse: “Joey had been abusing massive amounts of alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy, meth and, as part of his bodybuilding, steroids since he was a teenager and had come very close to death through an overdose.”

A female friend found the 29-year-old Joey at a friend’s home near Chicago early this morning. Joey was lying on the floor, unconscious, with blood coming out of his nose and ears according to TMZ. The woman called 911 and authorities rushed to the scene. Joey was pronounced dead on their arrival.
Joey’s family suspects his death was related to complications with drug abuse and was accidental. No further details have been released at this time.
“MTV is deeply saddened to learn that Joey Kovar ofThe Real World: Hollywood has passed away,” a spokesperson for the network announced. “We offer our sympathies to Joey’s loved ones, friends and fans.”
Joey had been active on Twitter on Thursday. “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us,” he tweeted yesterday.
