Owning Manhattan’s Jessica Markowski Explains Why Show Is ‘Special’

Across all of the different streamers, there are approximately a million and one real estate reality shows, give or take. The latest in the crowded subgenre is Netflix’s Owning Manhattan, which follows the realtors at Ryan Serhant’s agency. Although it sounds like something you’ve already seen, Jessica Markowski, one of the show’s reality TV newbies, recently explained why their show is a cut above the rest.

What makes Owning Manhattan so special?

We tune into Selling Sunset for the fashion and the drama. We watch Buying Beverly Hills for the latest scoop on Mauricio Umansky’s separation from Kyle Richards. So, what is there to see with Owning Manhattan? According to Jessica, their show is different because they’re “real.” As if we haven’t heard that from every other real estate agent turned reality star.

“I think what sets us apart is the fact that we are very real,” Jessica said in an interview with People. “Every transaction I did on the show or during the course of the time of filming, it was all real-time. And that’s what I think makes it really special.”

Ultimately, the show doesn’t sound too much different from what we’ve seen on Million Dollar Listing New York or Selling Sunset. Jessica said it’s going to be a little bit of reality with a whole lot of drama. It’s almost as if they’re following an established format that has proven to be successful.

Jessica explained, “You get the good, bad, ugly, and crazy, and we captured every single bit of that, right?”

She continued, “When people watch real estate, they think it’s so glamorous and beautiful and ‘I should become a broker.’ But we got to show that it’s not as cookie-cutter and easy. At least I hope we portrayed that there’s obstacles that we all face. There’s bidding wars, there’s, sadly, drama.”

Jessica did a fantastic job of sugarcoating the fact that this is Selling Sunset but in the Big Apple. Either way, she’s fully convinced that Owning Manhattan is doing something differently, and she has her fingers crossed that Netflix will greenlight a second season.

Owning Manhattan is streaming on Netflix.
