Season 47 of the beloved CBS show Survivor is set to premiere in September 2024. Season 46 wrapped in May with a dramatic final episode. Salon Owner Kenzie Petty was rewarded the coveted 1 million dollar prize after securing five jury votes. Much about the upcoming season is still under wraps but a few details have been revealed.
Here is everything we know about Survivor 47…
When Is the premiere of Survivor 47?
The new season will kick off with a two-hour premiere on Wednesday, September 18 on CBS. The remainder of the episodes, excluding the finale, will be 90 minutes long. The finale, expected to air on Wednesday, December 11, will be three hours. Fans have been critical of changes made to the show’s format in recent years but the network’s decision to extend the episodes has been welcomed by longtime viewers.
“90-minute episodes is the best addition to Survivor in many years,” one Reddit user wrote.
“I really really like the 90 minute format. So much more insight into camp life, and challenges don’t take up as much of an episode,” another user commented.
The network decided to extend the episodes during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. They chose to keep the change after seeing the positive response from fans.
Who Are the Castaways on Survivor 47?
CBS has not released the official cast list for Season 47 yet but we know a bit about the future castaways.
After the Season 46 finale, CBS aired the first teaser trailer for Season 47 and fans tuned into politics may have recognized a familiar face. Jon Lovett, host of the popular political podcast Pod Save America, will be one of the castaways in the upcoming season.
Jon spoke about his Survivor journey during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in June 2024, telling the host he enjoyed the time away from his phone.
“It was glorious,” he said. “Sometimes I imagine being away from my phone maybe for longer, maybe forever.”
In addition to the podcast star, fans also got a glimpse at some of the other castaways headed for reality TV stardom.
CBS has been further committed to improving cast diversity in its unscripted programs in recent years. Since 2021, Survivor has required casts to feature at least 50% Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) members for the last
Host Jeff Probst spoke about the importance of representation in an April 2024 interview with Deadline.
“That will go down as one of the most positive and significant changes ever in Survivor,” he told the outlet. “More people are applying now than ever, and it’s going up every season in every single category — African-American, East Asian, Middle Eastern, South Pacific Islander, Latino/Hispanic, Asian. it’s the perfect illustration of what we say all the time, which is representation matters.”
Where was Survivor 47 Filmed?
Survivor 47 was filmed in beautiful Fiji. The series used to change locations every season but the show gave up the nomad routine after producers fell in love with Fiji in Season 33. The Mamanuca Islands have been Survivor’s home ever since. According to Forbes, the show gets considerable support from the Fiji government and the beautiful scenery is hard to beat.
Jeff spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his love for the Islands.
“I hope we stay here forever,” he said.
The Survivor 47 cast filmed in Fiji for 26 days. The show shortened the filming schedule from 39 days to 26 days in 2021. The decision caused an uproar among fans who disapproved of the change.
Jeff defended the decision in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He pushed back against the claim that shortening the number of days made the castaway’s experience easier.
“As for the difficulty, I think it’s pretty clear even just from this season if anything, the new era — brace yourself, old-time players — is more difficult,” he said. “The physical demands of surviving with very, very little — or for some players no food — is extremely punishing and it begins to break you down mentally. You can’t think, you can’t sleep, you can’t trust. That leads to the emotional breakdown, which can be brutal.”
