Val Chmerkovskiy Reacts to Brother Maks’ Anna Delvey Criticism: ‘She Worked Hard’

Casting Anna Delvey on Season 33 of Dancing with the Stars was a controversial move. Of course, everyone loves an underdog story and roots for someone to get a second chance. But in Anna’s case, that support didn’t materialize. It could be because of her criminal past or simply because she didn’t connect with the audience. Anna and her partner were eliminated during Oscars Night. One critic who recently slammed Anna’s performance was DWTS alum Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Now his brother and current DWTS pro Val Chmerkovskiy is weighing in.

Maksim Chmerkovskiy isn’t an Anna Delvey fan

Maksim previously sounded off about Anna’s performance ability. “She’s just a sh*tty dancer … I didn’t even get to see the ‘why’ she got on the show,” he stated. Tell us how you really feel, Maksim! But Anna clapped back in her Instagram Stories. “Who’s this Maksim person?” she wrote. “He must be poor.” Oof.

Meanwhile, Anna’s partner Ezra Sosa waded into the drama, sharing that after the first show, Anna hid in the bathroom crying. The online hate was too much. He felt bad for her and had hoped that she would have a positive experience on the show.

Val Chmerkovskiy said that Anna Delvey “did well”

Now fan favorite, Val voiced his opinion about Anna, and it seemed to differ from his brother Maksim’s take. “He has his opinion. Whether I share his opinion or not, that’s not my quote, and that’s not my position to talk about it,” Val told US Weekly. “First of all, shout-out to Ezra, her pro, who did an amazing job. Val added, “I think she worked hard, and she did well — and that’s it.”

As you may recall, in 2019, Anna was convicted of grand larceny, attempted grand larceny, and theft. She was sentenced to 12 years in prison. However, in 2021 she was released on parole. The remainder of her sentence will be served under house arrest, which explains the bedazzled tracking anklet.

Val said that Anna’s past crimes had “nothing to do with her presently doing Dancing with the Stars.” But he did understand Maksim’s feelings. “I also understand where he’s coming from,” Val said.

As for Anna? After her elimination, co-host Julianne Hough asked Anna what she was taking away from her experience on DWTS. “Nothing,” she responded. Well, maybe it was the right time for Anna to Samba out of the ballroom.

Dancing with the Stars Season 33 will return with two episodes on Monday, October 7, and Tuesday, October 8 at 8/7c on ABC and Disney+.
