Rebecca Minkoff, one of Real Housewives of New York Season 15’s newbies, has drawn a lot of attention online. Most RHONY viewers understandably fixate on Rebecca’s ties to Scientology. For her part, Rebecca hasn’t said much about her faith.
If people know anything about Scientology, it’s usually one of three things. One, Tom Cruise is a Scientologist. Two, the church’s beliefs are far from mainstream. Three, there are controversial political, medical, and financial stories swirling around the church.
With those controversies out in the air, what does Rebecca have to say about her beliefs?
Rebecca Minkoff cites Scientology’s assistance in her life
In speaking with Page Six, Rebecca shared, “We’re at a time and place where we can be divided and lead with hate and bigotry or we can just be tolerant of people’s beliefs.” That statement is fair enough in a vacuum but … well, we’ll get into it.
Further, “[Scientology] has helped me personally. It’s helped me professionally. It’s helped me weather a lot of stress. That’s what I use it for. It’s a method I apply to help me with stress.” Again, when taking this statement on its own, there’s nothing wrong with that. If Scientology were purely for an individual’s self-help, that would be just fine.
Unfortunately, the Church of Scientology is not just a self-help organization. It’s a tax-exempt organization with observed controversies under its belt, like many religious institutions. Thus (not to twist Rebecca’s words, but), when most people aren’t “tolerant” toward Scientology, the intolerance has less to do with the beliefs and more to do with the controversial practices.
For example, on October 2, Radar Online reported on Rebecca’s father’s involvement in a wrongful death lawsuit related to the Church of Scientology. Allegedly, rather than providing his patient with legitimate medical treatment, Dr. David offered Whitney Mills (another Scientologist) treatment that aligned with the church’s practices. That raises a lot of eyebrows…
Real Housewives of New York continues Tuesdays at 9/8c on Bravo.
