Chandler Kinney might be killing it right now on Dancing with the Stars, but that doesn’t mean the journey is all sunshine and roses. The actress admitted she has a hard time when it comes to being judged and scored; which is the exact job of the DWTS judges.
On the October 15 episode, Chandler and her partner did pretty well with their contemporary, scoring 32 points. Unfortunately, the judges saw them wobbling and slightly out of sync. But on the October 22 episode, Chandler and her partner had the highest score of the night with their Paso Doble.
The judges acknowledged that it was difficult to hear their criticisms sometimes. On the flip side, they also acknowledged that Chandler killed it, showing utter improvement. The competition had better watch out for Chandler, even if she lets the criticism get to her sometimes.
Chandler Kinney says the DWTS judges gave her an “extra push” with their critiques
In speaking to Us Weekly after her October 22 performance, Chandler said, “I think last week was super important for my journey here. I think it gave me a push that I needed. I think I did have to look inside and see what was missing. I don’t ever want anybody not connecting with anything that I do.”
However, she couldn’t help but take the judges’ criticisms “really personally” since she would describe herself as “an artist.” She explained, “I story-tell for a living. So I want to make sure that my stories are coming across.” Granted, Chandler recognized a difference between ballroom dancing and acting, which added to the challenge of it all.
“I think I said it in the package, I really just needed to externalize it,” she said. “I think as a TV and film actor, it’s different than being on a live stage under bright lights. I think that they just gave me a little extra push that I probably really needed. So I appreciate it.” Still, she acknowledged the difficulty in performing for judges. “I don’t know what their expectation of me was emotionally tonight,” she admitted.
Dancing with the Stars continues Tuesdays at 8/7c on ABC and Disney+.
