Below Deck Sailing Yacht: Captain Glenn Shephard Reacts to Cloyce Martin’s Drama With Daisy Kelliher

So far, Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 has been a bit of a rough ride for Chef Cloyce Martin. After deciding (without Captain Glenn Shephard’s permission) that it was okay for him to go on an excursion with the guests, he received a stern warning from the skipper: “Keep in mind professionalism.”

Not only was Glenn unhappy that Cloyce didn’t have lunch ready for the guests as soon as they returned, but rather than baking a cake for the primary’s 60th birthday, Cloyce ordered a store-bought one. He tried to make it better by heating it up, but when the cake fell apart, Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher said it looked “like a pile of dog sh*t.”

“We can’t serve that,” Daisy declared. “He tried to take a shortcut. He was being lazy, [and] he orders a sh*tty cake, microwaves it … It’s horrific.”

Captain Glenn depends on Daisy Kelliher to work things out on Below Deck Sailing Yacht

Although Glenn doesn’t remember much about the cake fiasco, he recently told The Daily Dish how he felt about the chef purchasing a dessert rather than making it from scratch.

“Generally speaking, no, we don’t want to buy a cake,” Glenn said. “We want to make a cake. That’s why we have a chef.”

He did, however, offer exceptions to that rule. “In some circumstances, maybe it’s not realistic,” he explained. “Sometimes you have to cut corners.”

After the charter, Daisy pulled Glenn aside and shared her concerns.

“I think the chef’s gonna be an issue,” Daisy said. “I really want him to succeed. But I feel like there’s a little bit of, like, the bare minimum. You know, he wanted to go to the beach yesterday, and I was like, ‘What about lunch?’”

“I want her to keep me informed,” Glenn said. “I don’t want these things to brew under the surface without me being aware of them.”

But keeping with his style of management, he asked Daisy to try to work things out with the chef. If there’s no improvement by the next charter, Glenn will step in.

“I like the departments to work things out between themselves if they can,” he added. “It makes for a stronger team.”

Staff hiccups are just par for the course on Below Deck Sailing Yacht

A few growing pains while the chef and the chief stew settle into a good working relationship are normal on a yacht. The heads of departments have to learn to work together despite each other’s quirks.

“The same thing applies whether there’s a camera there or not,” Glenn clarified. “It’s par for the course. It’s always a little bit of a struggle between those two departments. They both want to impress the guests, but they’re coming from different angles. One is all about presentation. One is about the food. It should be about the whole package.”

Although Glenn had some doubts about Cloyce at first, watching the show has given him a new perspective. “I’m quite impressed by Cloyce,” Glenn admitted. “I think he’s a real character.”

Glenn believes Cloyce really “wants to impress” the crew, as well as the guests. But he’s had some bumps in the road with Daisy, even though he’s got a soft spot for her.

“Chalk it up to maybe a lack of experience,” Glenn shared. “But overall, I’ve been pretty impressed by Cloyce. I think he carries himself well.”

Below Deck Sailing Yacht airs Mondays at 9/8c on Bravo.
