Dancing with the Stars Season 33 is in full swing, with six celebrities now left in the competition, and Disney Night now in the rear-view mirror. Every week on DWTS, there is a different theme that the pros and celebs must incorporate into their dances accordingly. While some themes are present almost every season, others are more uncommon.
So far, DWTS Season 33 has featured several fascinating themed nights. The second week of the competition was Oscars Night, where the celebs and their partners danced to songs from Oscar-nominated films. The two-night special the following week included Soul Train Night followed by Hair Metal Night. Week 4 saw the remaining celebs dedicate their dances to someone special for an emotional Dedication Night. After that, Week 5 was a blast with Disney Night while Week 6 brought the scares with Halloween Night.
While every theme on DWTS is unique in its own way, Disney Night always stands out above the rest. Hands down, Disney Night is the best theme, so hopefully it never goes away!
Disney Night on DWTS includes stories and songs almost everyone is familiar with
The thing I love most about Disney Night is the fact that I know every song and costume. I’ll admit that as a member of Gen Z, I was absolutely clueless on Soul Train and Hair Metal Nights. The beautiful thing about Disney is that it’s something individuals of almost any age have had at least some exposure to. Disney is a huge part of pop culture, so it’s a ton of fun to watch a show like DWTS dedicate an entire night to it.
There are so many Disney movies that are timeless classics, no matter how old you get. For example, who doesn’t know the iconic Kiss the Girl song from The Little Mermaid? It was beautiful to watch Jenn Tran and Sasha Farber perform a rumba to the classic hit. The costumes and scenery just made the performance all the more fun. Jenn rocked a red Ariel wig, while Sasha looked exactly like Prince Eric.
Another great performance from this year’s Disney Night came from Joey Graziadei and his partner Jenna Johnson. Joey and Jenna danced a Samba to Trashin’ the Camp from Tarzan. This was a fun dance, as Joey and Jenna perfectly embodied the characters of Tarzan and Jane. Even if you’re not the biggest Disney fan on the planet, you’ve got to know Tarzan!
Disney Night allows DWTS competitors to take on roles they can relate to
While Disney Night is fun on the surface, it can be a lot more meaningful for some DWTS contestants. This year in particular really allowed the competitors to portray Disney characters that they had something in common with. One of the night’s standout performances featured Ilona Maher as Luisa from Encanto, while her partner Alan Bersten hilariously played one of Luisa’s donkeys. Luisa was the perfect fit for Ilona, who is just as tough and strong as she is.
Another good portrayal this year was Dwight Howard as Wreck-It Ralph. Throughout the competition, Dwight and his partner Daniella Karagach have stood out for their massive height difference. What better way to honor this than with a dance from Wreck-It Ralph, which is famous for its protagonist who is larger than most.
Finally, Stephen Nedoroscik and his partner Rylee Arnold nailed their Charleston to A Star Is Born from Hercules. As an Olympic gymnast, Stephen has quite a lot in common with a hero like Hercules. To make things even better, Hercules takes place in Greece which also happens to be where the Olympics began.
Disney Night makes for some excellent DWTS team dances
This year’s Disney Night featured two amazing team dances, which made the night even more fun. Team dances are always an interesting part of DWTS, as it’s fun to watch the competitors interact and work together. While some themed nights make for boring team dances, the Disney ones sure didn’t disappoint!
The first team dance was a Lion King-themed performance by Team Roar. This team included Stephen and Rylee, Dwight and Daniella, Phaedra Parks and Val Chmerkovskiy, and Danny Amendola and Witney Carson. All eight team members were dressed perfectly for the part, which helped to bring the dance to life. The cherry on top was Dwight lifting Stephen at the end of the dance, as Mufasa does with Simba in the film.
Team Roar’s opponent was Team Goofs, who danced a team routine inspired by The Goofy Movie. This team consisted of Jenn and Sasha, Joey and Jenna, Ilona and Alan, and Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong. Team Goofs’ dance was another fun watch, much like the movie it was inspired by. One of my favorite parts of this dance were the green jumpsuits worn by the men, which were exact replicas of those from the movie.
