Karen Huger Fires Lawyers After Conviction and Asks for DUI Sentencing Delay

During Season 9 of The Real Housewives of Potomac, Grand Dame Karen Huger deflected any talk about her DUI. In March 2024, Karen was arrested for hitting a street sign and a tree with her car. As a result, Karen was charged with driving under the influence, as well as some other charges. Unfortunately, Karen’s court case did not work out as she predicted.

In December 2024, Karen went to trial. The jury found Karen guilty of driving under the influence, as well as failure to control speed to avoid a collision, negligent driving, and failure to notify authorities of an address change. She was acquitted of the charge of reckless driving. And Karen could serve up to two years in prison.

Meanwhile, Karen entered rehab in early January, on the day that the RHOP reunion was filming. “Karen made the important decision to enter a private recovery program, so was unable to attend the reunion taping today. We stand behind Karen as she embarks on this meaningful journey,” Ryan Tresdale, Karen’s manager, said in a statement.

According to In Touch, Karen pink-slipped her legal team and requested that her January 29, 2025 sentencing be delayed. The reason? Karen needed to consult with her new legal team and finish her rehab stint. In the end, the judge granted Karen’s request, and her new sentencing date is February 26, 2025.

In Karen’s court motion, her new attorneys, Barry Helfand and David A. Martella, explained why Karen fired her former attorneys. “Ms. Huger is seeking to have the benefit of counsel’s 30 years of experience handling cases of this kind, in the Maryland Courts, and in fashioning recommendations that State and the Court may find acceptable to address the community’s interests in accountability, rehabilitation, supervision, and deterrence,” the court document read. “The rules of the program severely limit the counsel’s ability to communicate with Ms. Huger and prepare for sentencing. [Karen] will be returning from that program on January 28, 2025, the day before the scheduled sentencing.”

Right now, Karen’s RHOP future could be in jeopardy. If Karen receives jail time, that could sink her Bravo gig.

Real Housewives of Potomac continues on Sundays at 8/7c on Bravo.
