Demi Moore Wasn’t on Best Terms With Her Body: ‘I Was Punishing Myself’

Demi Moore recently opened up about her body transformation during her early career when she wasn’t on the best terms with how she looked. During a recent interview, the actor got candid about how her perception of herself has changed over the years. Moore recalled doing “crazy things” with her diet and exercise when she was more focused on her physical appearance. However, the Oscar nominee revealed her priority now is her “overall health and well-being.”

Demi Moore admits having an ‘antagonistic relationship’ with her body

Demi Moore admitted she put herself through a lot to achieve her multiple body transformations. The 62-year-old actor graced the cover of PEOPLE‘s World’s Most Beautiful issue. During the candid interview, she opened up about her focus on her physical appearance in her early career. Moore revealed that at the time, she was “so harsh and had a much more antagonistic relationship” with her body. The Golden Globe-winning actor admitted, “And straight up, I was really just punishing myself.”

Moore recalled the grueling diet and exercise she maintained for her roles in “Striptease” and “G.I. Jane” in the ’90s. She said, “I mean, crazy things [with] diet and exercise, biking from Malibu and going all the way to Paramount about 26 miles.” Moore added, “All because I had placed so much value on what my outsides looked like.” However, things took a turn after she wrapped “G.I. Jane.” 

After gushing about her “incredible experience” in the 1997 film, Moore revealed it was then she realized she was “exhausted from putting it [her body] through so much over such a long period of time.” Following the epiphany, she “stopped trying to control” her food and “had a moment of surrender.” Moore recalled, “I remember just asking to be my natural size because I didn’t know what it was anymore.” 

“The Substance” actor explained she had three pregnancies and did “all of this diet and exercise and controlled and changed it.” However, Moore then decided to “just let go.” During the interview, the Oscar nominee also shared her outlook now. Moore said, “It’s so much more about my overall health and well-being.” She explained it’s “more about longevity and quality of life” and added, “I think I’ve evolved into greater gentility towards myself.”
