Born on November 6, 1970, in Ethiopia, he was adopted by Swedish parents after his mother died of tuberculosis. Growing up in Gothenburg, Sweden, Marcus developed a love for cooking from his grandmother, which led him to study at the Culinary Institute in Gothenburg. He then trained in Switzerland and Austria to improve his skills. At 24, Marcus moved to the United States and became the executive chef at Aquavit in New York City. His creative cooking earned him a three-star review from The New York Times, making him the youngest chef to receive this honor. This recognition launched his career, and in 2010, he opened Red Rooster in Harlem. The restaurant is known for its lively atmosphere and diverse menu that celebrates Harlem’s culinary traditions. Marcus is also a successful author, having written several well-known cookbooks, such as “Yes, Chef” and “The Red Rooster Cookbook.” These books highlight his appreciation for cultural diversity and innovative cooking style, inspiring many chefs and food lovers.
